CV or Application

Many questions exist concerning what is the difference between an application form and a CV for seamen?  There are a few differences between the two types of application documents and this article will tell you  how to understand and how to use those documents to get job at sea.

What is CV for seaman

A CV  (Curriculum Vitæ  in Latin) is an in depth  document  what  contains a high level of detail about your achievements, a great deal more than just a career biography and can be over two or more pages and it covers your personal data; residence address,  your education, your marine skills as well as any other accomplishments like honors,  awards etc.

Your CV tends to be organized chronologically and should make it easy to get an overview of an individual’s full working career. A CV is static and doesn’t change for different positions you apply for, the difference would be in the cover letter.

Candidates send in CV accompanied by cover letters or letter of interest  for an open job at sea  offer by  email  and these documents act as the first impression to a possible employer.

What is an Application form for seaman

The application asks all sorts of personal data and career information such as contact info, vessel’s  info, company info, career positions and date sign on / off  (date of embarkation and leaving the vessel). An application is a form that a job candidate fills out to apply for an open position with a particular company.  Mostly crewing agencies has their own application form. An agency or a recruiter asks to fill out  just  their  form and it takes usually for an hour and even two.

Differences between CV and an Application form

Three major differences between CVs and application form are the length, the purpose, and the layout. An application form is a short brief of data over one or two pages maximum, where applicant’s personal data and work experience, but a CV is more detailed and can stretch well beyond two pages.

Once again, a CV is a list of an applicant’s qualifications, detailed career experience, and skills as it relates to their professional working history where as an application form information can be like a brief  to suit the seamam. We would say the main difference between an application form and a CV for seamen is that a CV is intended to be a full record of your career history including break period  if have so with targeted list of skills and achievements  and an application is a short brief where just personal data, list of certificates and work experience.

What form, CV or an application form, to use when you apply to open vacancy is just your own. But keep in mind the cover letter is the first impression to recruiter.  Good luck in your carrier at sea.
