The thing is, you don't want the laptop to run out of juice when you're on the road and have no access to a power socket.
By placing laptop on top of flat hard surface, heated air travel more easily out from the bottom of the laptop. But don't worry - USB external floppy drives are cheap. However, if you do not, be prepared to spend an extra $100. Whatever is the case, choose the designs you love.
